Give Allah Your Undivided Attention

Brother Hannif reflects on the blessing and etiquette of Jumu'ah and the spiritual bargain described in Surah As-Saff, where Allah calls believers to a transaction that trades worldly attachment for eternal reward. This khutbah reminds us to set aside our business and distractions for the sake of Allah and to let the Qur'an truly take hold of our hearts.

Brother Hannif opens by welcoming the congregation to Masjid An-Nur's gathering of knowledge and rectification, and turns to the etiquette of Jumu'ah. He explains that when the call to prayer is made, believers should come calmly and settled rather than rushing, and that Allah commands us to leave off business and trade for those crucial minutes so that our full attention is given to the remembrance of Allah, including setting aside phones and other distractions. He reminds the congregation that Jumu'ah is obligatory upon qualified adult men, while being easier upon women, the traveler, and the sick, and that whatever blessings we have in this life ultimately come from Allah rather than from our own effort or circumstance.

He then moves into the opening of Surah Al-Baqarah, reminding the congregation that the Qur'an is guidance for those who are mindful of Allah, and asks how much of that guidance is actually being lived out rather than simply read. He encourages the congregation to ask Allah for sincere guidance beyond worldly requests, and reminds them that Allah does not change a person's condition until they change the condition of their heart. In the second part of the khutbah, he turns to Surah As-Saff and describes the spiritual bargain Allah offers believers: investing belief, striving, and sacrifice in this life in exchange for protection from punishment and eternal reward in the next.

Brother Hannif closes by reminding the congregation that slipping and falling short is part of being human, and that what matters is getting back up rather than giving up, since perfection belongs to Allah alone. The practical takeaway he leaves the congregation with is to treat Jumu'ah as a weekly opportunity for rejuvenation and rectification, to set aside worldly business for the remembrance of Allah, and to make the most of this blessing before it is gone.
