Interdependence as an Act of Faith

Brother Ibrahim opens by reminding the congregation that calling upon Allah is an act of worship and humility, not a burden or a sign of weakness. He addresses the objection some raise about a God who "wants to be praised," pointing out the double standard in people who flatter others insincerely for personal gain yet resist humbling themselves before their Creator. He grounds this in the hadith warning against excessive praise of other people and in Allah's names, particularly al-Wahhab, the Bestower who needs nothing from His creation.

From there, he turns to the theme of interdependence, citing verses that describe Allah raising some people above others in provision so that they may be of service to one another, and noting that wealth is never a stamp of approval nor poverty a sign of divine neglect. He illustrates this with the story of a man who drowned while refusing the boat and helicopter sent to save him, still waiting for a miracle from God, to show how Allah often answers prayers through the people He sends our way. Brother Ibrahim connects this to real responsibilities: visiting the sick, correcting one another in error, and rejecting the excuse that "Allah doesn't need us" to act on behalf of our brothers and sisters.

He closes with practical reminders about sadaqah and zakat as means of relieving real hardship, a caution against those who neglect struggling family and community members while chasing worldly comforts, and the hadith of the companion told to stay home and serve his mother rather than go to jihad, since such service can itself be the greater struggle. The takeaway he leaves the congregation with is to actively check in on one another, give from what Allah has given, and understand that fulfilling these duties toward each other is itself a form of devotion to Allah.
