Returning to Allah With Sincere Repentance

Brother Khalifah reflects on seeking Allah's forgiveness, drawing on the dua of the believers in Surah Ali Imran and the hadith on accountability before and after accepting Islam. This khutbah reminds us that istighfar must be paired with sincere tawbah, and that no one is exempt from being judged by their deeds.

Brother Khalifah opens by reflecting on the dua found in Surah Ali Imran, where the believers call out to Allah acknowledging that He has guided them to faith, asking for forgiveness of their sins, and pleading not to be humiliated on the Day of Judgment. He reminds the congregation that none of us are Muslim by our own merit but only by the mercy of Allah, and that this same mercy is why we must constantly ask for forgiveness rather than taking our blessings and safety for granted while others in the world suffer oppression and hardship.

He then explains that seeking forgiveness, istighfar, must be paired with sincere repentance, tawbah, since asking Allah to forgive without the intention to stop returning to sin falls short. He references the hadith narrated by Ibn Mas'ud, where the Prophet ﷺ clarified that a person who perfects their Islam is not held accountable for what came before it, but a person who does evil after accepting Islam will be held accountable for both, correcting the misconception that saying the shahada grants automatic immunity. Brother Khalifah describes the fire in vivid terms, including the angels tasked with it who have been created without any mercy or empathy for those inside, to stress how serious and final this matter is, and briefly cautions against placing more trust in artificial intelligence than in the truth Allah has given us.

He closes by returning to Allah's address to the believers: to repent sincerely, with the hope that Allah will erase their sins and admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow. The practical takeaway he leaves the congregation with is to make consistent istighfar and tawbah a daily habit, to increase in gratitude and salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, and to check on the sick and make dua for them as an act of care within the community.
