The Quran Is Your Light

Brother Faisal reflects on the Qur'an as the light and guide for this life and the next, reminding us that abandoning it leaves a person lost. This khutbah urges every believer to set aside daily time for the Qur'an and to raise their families on it before the chance to do so is gone.

Brother Faisal opens by describing the Qur'an as the light that guides us out of darkness, revealed to the Prophet ﷺ, and warns that a person who sets it aside has no path to walk by. He urges the congregation to carve out real time for the Qur'an daily, even just an hour, rather than letting the busyness of work, family, and daily life crowd it out, reminding them that Allah describes those who turn away from His remembrance as living a difficult, constricted life in this world before any reckoning in the next.

He explains that the Qur'an is not merely a collection of stories but a cure for the diseases of the heart, and that reading it with understanding, reflecting on its meanings, and acting upon it is what brings real change to a person's character and treatment of others. Brother Faisal encourages parents especially to enroll their children in Qur'an classes so they grow up with this foundation and can make du'a for their parents in the future, and reminds the congregation of the reward attached to recitation itself, citing that a single letter is multiplied into many good deeds. He cautions that this life is short and unpredictable, illustrating this with the story of a healthy friend who suddenly collapsed while driving, to stress that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.

He closes by reminding the congregation that no worldly reward, wealth, status, or achievement compares to the reward Allah gives, since everything of this world ends at death while reward from Allah is lasting. The practical takeaway he leaves the congregation with is to treat this Jumu'ah as possibly the last, to make time today to sit with the Qur'an and with family, to correct one's own character first, and to prepare for the Hereafter rather than placing all hope in this worldly life.
